Modak is a traditional Indian sweet  popular in Maharashtra and South India. It is a favorite food of Lord Ganesha; thus we prepare it on Ganesh worship day- Ganesh Chaturthi or during Ganesh Festival and distributed as ‘prasad’.

White soft shell of this sweet is prepared using rice flour or wheat flour. You can make the sweet stuffing of it with fresh grated coconut and jaggery. Then steam (ukadiche modak) or fry it. It is served hot with ghee or coconut milk.

Following table gives nutritional information of a modak-

Serving size 1 Medium (Without ghee/coconut milk)

Modak is also rich in calcium and it contains some amount of sodium, iron, vitamin A etc. Coconut stuffing, especially,  is rich in calories, carbohydrates and saturated fats. Addition of ghee or coconut milk further increases its calorie and fat content.

It can be a good dish for those who want to gain weight but those who are on weight loss diet, beware… Excessive consumption of it will ruin your goals! Moderation is the key!! Enjoy it with a good amount of exercise!! You can also replace chapati or rice in your meal with modak!!!

Wish you all a very happy Ganesh Festival.
